Known for his humor and sideline antics, Frank Layden coached the Jazz from 1981-89 and had 277 wins, third-most in franchise history.

Layden, first hired in the NBA by Hall of Famer Hubie Brown as an assistant for the Atlanta Hawks, came to Utah as the New Orleans Jazz moved to the state in 1979. Then the team’s general manager, Layden stepped into the role of the team’s head coach in 1981.

Frank Layden, who coached the Utah Jazz with a colorful presence in the 1980s and was instrumental in building the team’s success in the ’90s, died at 93, the Jazz announced Wednesday. No cause of death was shared.
