LeMahieu was clogging up second base in New York, which needed to be opened up for Jazz Chisholm Jr. to return to his natural position. The Yankees didn't think LeMahieu could handle third, so they cut him loose and ate the last $22 million on his contract.
The 30-year-old former All-Star is struggling this season, slashing .208/.307/.368 with 12 home runs, 26 RBI and a .675 OPS. He also is used to hitting at Coors Field, so taking him away from that environment could affect him.
The New York Yankees are expecting a premium would be imposed by a division rival in potential trades for several good fits.
