Hamas announced on Friday that it had “submitted a positive response” to a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza, opening the path toward a deal to halt the conflict after months of failed efforts.
The U.S. president told reporters Friday on Air Force One that it was "good" that Hamas was ready to enter talks.
An Israeli source also confirmed that Israel received the document submitted by the mediators and that it, as well as Hamas's response to the proposal, are being examined. Hamas handed a "positive" response to the ceasefire and hostage deal proposal to mediators on Friday evening,
Hamas said it had given a positive response to the latest ceasefire proposal, adding that further talks were needed. But Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called the militant group's proposed changes to the deal unacceptable.
President Donald Trump has ramped up expectations around a possible 60-day ceasefire in the war in Gaza after he said Thursday that a response from Hamas was expected within the next day.
