In 1838 a border crisis ended without a battle because commanders chose restraint. In 1838, the United States and British North America (Canada) came close to war over the unclear northern border of Maine. Militias were mobilized, forts were constructed, and armed patrols moved into disputed territory. The confrontation, later called the Aroostook War, never became an actual war.
